ANESTHESIA—IT’S SAFER THAN YOU THINK!
Anesthesia is usually peoples' primary concern when their pet is undergoing a surgical or dental procedure. We understand that concern and do everything possible to ensure maximum safety.
Even though anesthesia should never be taken lightly we want to help you put it in proper perspective. There’s an element of risk associated with almost everything we do in life, certainly with every drug or medication we use—even aspirin. What we do is weigh benefits against risk.
Many factors make anesthesia a safe procedure:
- Anesthetic drugs are much safer than they used to be and are constantly getting better. We have a wide variety of anesthetic agents, both injectable and inhalation, so we can select a drug, or combination of drugs, that is the safest for each pet’s procedure.
- State of the art anesthetic machines and regular calibration of vaporizers by a board certified veterinary anesthesiologist insure accuracy of gas delivery systems.
- Preanesthetic physical examination to check for existing heart or lung problems.
- Laboratory tests to look for liver, kidney, or other changes that could affect the patient’s response to anesthesia.
- Electrocardiographic screening reveals possible heart rhythm abnormalities.
- Electronic monitoring of ECG and oxygenation throughout surgery give early warning of potential problems.
Nothing in life will ever be completely risk free but we can make anesthesia very, very safe. This means that in almost all cases, the risk of not doing a procedure is far greater than doing it. For example, not treating dental infection or not removing a mass can lead to problems that are far more life threatening than any anesthesia risk.
