GLUCOSAMINE AND CHONDROITIN SULFATE
Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate can play an important role in maintaining the health of joint cartilage. For many years, oral supplementation of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate has been advocated as an aid in managing osteoarthritis. Because the FDA considers these substances to be nutraceuticals and not drugs, manufacturers of these products are not required to do any studies proving their effectiveness. There are several studies, however, (and much anecdotal evidence), that indicate that they can be helpful. Because they can be helpful, and certainly are safe, we frequently use them as one means of treating osteoarthritis.
There are many of these supplements available at any drug store, grocery, or nutritional store. The question is, does it make any difference what one you chose? The answer is, yes it does. The absorption, availability within the joint and effectiveness can be affected by molecular weight, degree of purity, degree of sulfation and the source (bovine, porcine, avian, fish, or shellfish). Not all products are equal. Unfortunately for the consumer, you have no way to get this information since the manufacturer is not required to supply it (and probably doesn’t have it since they did no studies).
We recommend Cosequin, a veterinary product produced exclusively for dogs and cats. Several studies have been done demonstrating its effectiveness in stimulating synthesis of joint fluid and inhibiting degradation of joint cartilage.
