WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Frequently Asked Questions

Many of life’s problems are out of our control. We can’t stop them from happening—we just have to deal with them when they occur. Obesity of our pets is not one of those problems. It can be prevented, and by doing so we can add years to the life of our pets.
Obesity is the most common nutritional disease of dogs and cats, and affects 20-30% of the population. Don’t let it shorten the life of your pet.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT TIPS

  • Reduce your pet’s caloric intake by feeding approximately 1/4 less of your pet's regular food. If this is too drastic, switch to a low calorie, high fiber prescription food such as R/D. Use a measuring cup to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Dividing the daily amount into 2 – 3 small meals can help satisfy hunger.
  • Keep your pet out of the room when your food is being prepared or eaten.
  • Feed multiple pets separately. Do not allow access to other pets’ food.
  • Do not feed anything other than the amount and type of food prescribed by your veterinarian. Withholding food shows much more care and concern for your pet than allowing your pet to suffer the effects of obesity.
  • Exercise your pet regularly, but moderately. Over exercise may place undue stress on the heart or limbs.
  • Weigh your pet once a week and record the weight so you can follow the progress. It’s hard to evaluate the results of dieting when we see our pet every day. Feel free to stop by the office any time to use our scales.
